  17. <p>     The maxim "Once burned, twice shy" apparently doesn't mean
  18. much to televangelist Jimmy Swaggart. Disgraced in 1988 after a
  19. liaison with a Louisiana call girl, Swaggart, 56, was stopped by
  20. police in Indio, Calif., two weeks ago for a traffic violation
  21. and found to be in the company of Rosemary Garcia, an admitted
  22. streetwalker. That latest foray prompted Swaggart to resign from
  23. his Baton Rouge-based ministry last Tuesday to seek
  24. "professional counseling and medical care." But the next day the
  25. preacher reversed the decision, explaining to his congregation
  26. that God told him to return to the pulpit. Swaggart announced
  27. to supporters that "the Lord told me it's flat none of your
  28. business" and that he didn't have to apologize for his conduct.
  29. </p>
  30. <p>     Swaggart's organization has been in decline since rival
  31. preacher Marvin Gorman circulated photos of Swaggart visiting
  32. a prostitute in a New Orleans motel three years ago. The scandal
  33. forced Swaggart to resign from the Assemblies of God, the
  34. nation's largest Pentecostal denomination, and nearly 200
  35. television stations dropped his weekly program. The ministry
  36. took another hit last month when a jury in New Orleans found
  37. that Swaggart and others had defamed Gorman with allegations of
  38. adulterous behavior and ordered the group to pay $10 million in
  39. damages.
